Victoria Memorial

The Victoria Memorial

Category: Buildings

In 1897, funds were raised by public subscription to erect a building in honour of Queen Victoria, on the occasion of her diamond Jubilee. But unfortunately, she died before the building was completed in 1902, and it therefore became her memorial. The initials VRI which means “Victoria Regina-Imperatix” was cast in stone and remains on the gable end of the building today.

The building was first used as a reading room by paying subscribers and as a display house for artifacts of local interest. In 1911 it was converted to a museum.

The building is of a similar bungalow- type construction as the Public Library and has been altered slightly since the original construction. Part of the verandah to the north has been enclosed. The building is now used as the sales office for the National radio station.
