The Public Library

Category: Buildings

The Public Library was erected in 1906 from funds donated by American philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. It was designed by Dominica’s first administrator, Henry Heskeith Bell. It is a bungalow with a broad wraparound verandah and constructed in timber. The original design incorporated an upper floor but was eliminated because of insufficient funds.

Except for renovations to the roof and the fretwork on the balustrade, the library remains unchanged since 1906.
