Plantation Architecture

Category: Plantations

During the colonial period, Dominica lacked the economic stature that would afford it the plantation mansions or even the grand but less formal styles of architecture that would be encountered in the more affluent sugar producing countries. What was built were much less imposing structures that would serve a resident manager or attorney as in the case of the English; and in the case of the French, a more sturdy stone structure with a charming appeal for the owner.

Most of these ‘estate’ houses as they are commonly called in Dominica were constructed during the 19th and 20th centuries in the heydays of sugar and coffee production. With the decline of these industries, many of the houses would have been abandoned or neglected and others were totally destroyed by hurricanes or through decay. The remaining few have now fallen into an advance state of disrepair.
